Electrical Stimulation

Electrical stimulation is an incredibly versatile therapy; ranging from muscle relaxation to strength building. When a therapist applies low voltage stimulation to the skin, the transmission of pain signals are blocked, endorphins are released, trigger points are alleviated, acupressure points are simulated and relaxation occurs. A higher voltage causes deeper nerves to be activated and muscle contraction can be generated. This reflexive action is ideal for fighting atrophy in horses with injuries that require stall rest or immobilization. The stimulation not only works the muscles, keeping them healthy and primed for return to exercise, but increases circulation of blood and lymph which helps to repair injured tissues and remove toxins. Using electrical stimulation after competition prevents muscle damage that is caused by a build-up of metabolic waste products; reducing the horse’s muscle soreness and prospect of tying-up. Induced muscle contraction can also help combat acute nerve damage due to trauma, clear edema and strengthen recovering tendons.
